Ressence Type 3 - The Fluid, The Dial and The sapphire
By Kunal Bajaj & Arjun Sekhri — April 10, 2013
Ressence recently announced a new unique watch to be launched at Baselworld 2013. Ressence Type 3 has a life-like aura to it. The secret lays in the display being filled with liquid. The sapphire crystal and the naptha-type fluid share a more similar refraction as compared to air and hence it makes time travel from the dial to the crystal. The use of high-contrasting colors that is black dial, white indicators & a tinge of orange makes the display easier to see. The dial appears to be two-dimensioned because of the optical illusion created by the dome-shaped sapphire crystal and the liquid that fills the upper compartment of the watch. The expansion and contraction of the liquid is automatically controlled by a thermostatic valve and thereby keeping the illusion stable. The complications and indications have been shaped convex similar to the sapphire crystal dome to enhance the direct projection of the dial onto the crystal.
The dial consists of three centrally placed discs which show seconds, hours and day. The brim of the watch has two rings, the inner ring shows minutes and the outermost shows the date at 6’o clock. Another interesting fact about the watch is that instead of the hands the indicating discs and the outer ring do the moving around. The sapphire case extends to the back of the watch thus eliminating the need of a crown. Type-3 comes with a gravitational gearing system that allows you to change the time and date settings when the watch is rotated.
Except for the gears all the components of the watch are made up of titanium and the display system comprises of 28 gears and 57 jewels. The diameter of the watch is 44mm and has a 36 hours power reserve. The upper segment encompasses a water resistant seal and a shock absorption system.
Price - USD 29,992.

At Last; after 35 years as a watch repairer I see one that I would be tempted to "invest" in.
I'll bet that this type of display will stir up the crystal manufacturers in the same way that
Bulova did in the 60's with the tuning fork escapement.
