By Romit Jethwaney & Arjun Sekhri — March 06, 2013

A high quality sailing watch is required for hitting the start line on time. When you are racing amongst 30 professional boats, ease of use and speed are extremely important factors. Your timepiece needs to have a large clear display which can be read at a glance, as well as large buttons that can be set quickly - even with cold hands. A digital compass, tide graph and a baromoter are prerequisites of an efficient sailing watch complimented by long battery life, backlight and moon data function.

Here is a list of the top sailing and yachting watches that delivers precision and charisma to the sailor in you.

Alpina Extreme Sailing Regatta

Alpina

The new Extreme Sailing Regatta in particular offers exceptional value; it’s a clean, functional and good-looking watch that appears far more expensive than it is. The Sailing features a 44mm stainless steel case that has squared-off proportions and short strap lugs. It’s water-resistant to 300 metres, so it is a useable dive watch that won’t be bothered by a trip to the pool. The design is simple but very nicely done – while measuring a pretty substantial 44mm, it wears really comfortably owing to the short strap lugs and square shape. It’s a big watch that can be worn by anyone; it will fit any wrist size with ease. The case is well finished, with some angular detailing on the sides and a nice mix of polished and brushed portions. The caseback has an exhibition window to show off the movement, a Selitta calibre automatic modified and decorated by Alpina.

Harry Winston Ocean Sport Chrono

Harry Winston Ocean Sport Chronograph

Filling a bridge between their more traditional collections and the horological fireworks of the Harry Winston Opus series, Ocean Sport is a surprisingly technical and quirky, and even contemporary, set of watches for a company that is still perceived to be 'all about the diamonds'. One detail that sets Ocean Sport apart is that the cases are all made from Zalium a hypoallergenic, titanium-based alloy exclusive to the company and meant to recall Harry Winston’s early training as a chemical engineer. Zalium has previously been used in small quantities at Harry Winston, in part because the alloy is extremely difficult to machine thanks to both its hardness and the relatively low temperature at which it burns. Obviously enough, the alloy is secondary to the design in creating the contemporary feel of the Ocean Sport, though the lightness helps. The mechanical part of the watch is based on an automatically winding movement, decked in Clous de Paris style, with graphic cut-outs that "draw the eye to the display mechanisms”. In fact, the watch sports a 42 hour power reserve to ensure it runs smoothly. The men’s watches have multi-layered dials, superluminova details and strong 44mm two-tone bezels plus a maximum 200-meter water resistance. In terms of looks, it sports charcoal tones, light grey and white hues with blue spots.  The gorgeous Harry Winston Ocean Sport Chronograph will be available in a limited edition of just 300 units.

Parmigiani Pershing 005

Parmigiani

Parmigiani although may have been in the business for little less than 16 years, but their integrated manufacturing capacities exceed even old timers. Located in Switzerland, the brand has an in-house production unit which is an applaudable fact since only watch makers with decades old heritage have the same. Their capability of producing a timepiece from start to end at such a young age in the industry is only a reflection of their strong values and dedication. One exquisite timepiece is the Fleurier Pershing 005. Available in a stainless steel case around 45 mm in diameter with water resistance of 20 bars. The round case is finished with both polished and satin brushed surfaces. Louis Vuitton Tambour Regatta Navy

Louis Vuitton Regatta

In 2010, Louis Vuitton offered a novel way of reading the time with the Tambour Spin Time collection. Its secret: the hours are revealed by cubes which rotated simultaneously to show either a neutral or numbered face.Building on this now iconic movement, Louis Vuitton is developing the collection with a new reference dedicated to Regattas: the Tambour Spin Time Regatta.A distinctly nautical example of pure watchmaking, the Tambour Spin Time Regatta is set in a white gold case with an alligator strap and features a red push button to activate the Regatta complication, positioned at 8 o’clock. Once on board, a simple push of the button and the "chrono” indication that appears in the 12 o’clock aperture disappears to be replaced by the word "Régate”.At the same time, the chronograph’s 30-minute counter will leap forward and move to the 5-minute countdown displayed in red in the counter. Water resistance is up to 100 meters.

Richard Mille RM 015 Perini Navi Cup

Richard Mille RM 015 Perini Navi Cup

Richard Mille is the official timekeeper of the Perini Navi Cup, one of the finest and most exclusive regattas in the world. Inspired by the world renowned and extraordinary sailing vessels created by the yacht builders Perini Navi of Viareggio, Italy, the RM 015 echoes the visual elements and nautical details found on these luxurious craft. The individual parts of a Richard Mille timepiece are created specifically to compliment the design concept. The Richard Mille RM 015 Perini Navi Cup is an extensively intense example of the cutting edge work being done at the Mille shop. The high-tech barrage begins at the movement plate itself where carbon nanofiber construction means better rigidity between the plate and the bridges and enhanced stability at temperature extremes.  Mainspring tension is displayed on a torque indicator that's positioned between 2 and 4 o'clock on the transparent dial. To set or wind the Perini Navi, you first engage a push-button located mid-crown to select a 'gear'.  A hand at 4 o'clock displays the selected position:  'C' (Carica) for winding, 'N' (Neutral) for wearing, and 'L' (Lancette) for hand setting.

The a tonneau-shaped case is exquisitely finished in 18kt gold or white gold case with a suitably impressive 48mm length x 39.3mm width x 13.84mm thickness. The brushed field of the case front contrasts nicely with the high-polish troughs which seem to form the longitude line of a globe. The transparent caseback enables a clear view of the manual winding tourbillion movement. 8 titanium spline screws hold the case together for better control of torque during assembly. The watch has a skeletonised dial with white Arabic numerals, tourque indicator at 3 o’clock, function selector between 4 and 5 o’clock, 23 jewel calibre RM015 manual-winding tourbillon movement, a 75 hour power reserve indicator between 1 and 2 o’clock, and is water resistant to 50 metres.   The 3 dimensional aspect of the dial is further enhanced by the recessed deep nautical blue bezel and the white minute track. A yacht club burgee surrounded by the 'Perini Navi Cup' monachre floats on a badge under the glass and between 7 and 8 o'clock. This is one of the ultimate sailing watches to flaunt.
