The Imperial Fountain watch from De Bethune pays a tribute to the Yuan Ming Yuan – Water Clock in Beijing. Every bit of the watch speaks of elegance and incredible craftsmanship and is a rare display of the ancient meeting the modern. The fountain of the Old Summer Palace was created for the Qianlong Emperor of China by Chinese Artisan and French and Italian Jesuits in the mid-1700s.
The fountain or rather the water clock had animal heads corresponding to the zodiac signs and would jet water from their mouth according to the time. Plunders and loots later left the fountain deformed and all the heads were stolen. As of now seven out of the twelve heads could be retrieved back. The series features twelve different animal heads representing the Chinese Zodiac calendar.
The entire dial, including the animal heads and Chinese numerals are hand engraved by master artist Michèle Rothen in solid gold and has flame blued-steel peripheral hands instead of central ones so as not to obscure the elegant engraving of the animal heads. In order to have peripheral hands, De Bethune has developed a new movement i.e., Calibre DB 2145, having 287 parts. The animal heads are placed on a grand feu enamel dial. The indicating hands are placed under the enamel dial and only the tips are visible allowing the gold engravings a lot of space.
The imperial fountain uses a lot of new techniques like using micro ball bearings and the revolving disks are driven by a new transmission system. De Bethune trademark - Silicon/white gold balance wheel and balance spring with flat terminal along with the company’s parachute shock absorbing system are used in this new movement. The diameter of this watch is 43mm and the entire dial except for the enameling is set in gold. The Yuan Ming Yuan – Water Clock replica is enraptured in a white gold case and comes with an extra supple Alligator leather strap. The Clepsydra is secured in a white gold case and comprises of 31 jewels and has a power reserve of 6 days when fully wound.
