America’s Cup 2013 - International Sailing Spectacle
By Romit Jethwaney — March 06, 2013

The sailing action at the America's Cup
Since 1851, every year two yacht clubs compete for this prestigious cup. Each yacht club represents its respective syndicates of sailors. This regatta is a face off between the defender and challenger – the former being the world champion and the latter, the qualified contender.

For a long time, there was only one potential challenger. In 1970, for the first time, there were multiple potential challengers, so the New York Yacht Club agreed that the challengers run a challenger selection series with the winner becoming the challenger for that year and competing against the defender in the America's Cup challenge. For three decades, The Louis Vuitton Cup has been an instrumental series in selecting the team to sail as the challenger in the America's Cup.

The 34th America's Cup will be sailed in 2013 in San Francisco, California with 72-foot wing-sail catamarans. Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) is the defender of the America's Cup, after their racing team, BMW Oracle Racing defeated the Swiss Alinghi team of Société Nautique de Genève in the 2010 America's Cup. On May 12, 2011, the Italian Club Nautico di Roma withdrew as the Challenger of Record and was replaced by the Royal Swedish Yacht Club.

On August 2, 2012, the America's Cup Event Authority announced that four challenging teams would compete for the right to challenge Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup in September 2013.
